It must be stated that the laws governing every African state, especially those enacted through a legitimately constituted parliament, must be upheld at all costs. Just as Trump’s America basks in the euphoria of the America First mantra, the right of African states to self-determination must be respected in accordance with Article 1 of the UN Charter (1945). The double standard whereby the United States preaches freedom while meddling in the affairs of nations across the globe remains condemned and unacceptable.

Let me also use this opportunity to warn African leaders that any law enforced upon the people must pass through a thorough democratic process, embodying the principle of a law of the people, by the people, and for the people.

We must do everything in our power to uphold our democratic tenets without interference, fear, or favour.
