African Leaders Must be Brave to Stop Western Imperialists in their Tracks – Francis Onyema

I must state that it was a troubling sight to watch Donald Trump accuse Mr. Ramaphosa of genocide and a land-grabbing scheme targeting minority white South Africans without any rebuttal from Mr. Ramaphosa, who ought to have reminded the U.S. President of the constitutional provisions and laws of the South African people, which must be respected.

It was even more distasteful for Donald Trump to repeatedly remind Mr. Ramaphosa that he has “friends” in South Africa whose interests must be protected, above the interests of the South African people.

The posture, body language, and actions of President Ramaphosa during that meeting were appalling, to say the least. That meeting was not just an embarrassment to South Africans but to Africa and her leaders as a whole. We must desist from always going cap in hand, begging for investments from individuals who would readily desecrate the constitutional and justice systems of our lands.

It has become a common phenomenon that America preaches freedom and the rule of law only when it suits its agenda, but abandons these ideals when the chips are down or when desperation kicks in.

Conjectures like the purported genocide claims are not new to the United States’ domineering and destabilizing foreign policy. We’ve seen similar scenarios in Iran and Syria, where they were accused, often without conclusive proof, of developing nuclear weapons for the wrong reasons.

The accusation of genocide against Mr. Ramaphosa was a thinly veiled attempt to arm-twist the South African leader into opening the nation’s rare earth mineral reserves and markets to the U.S., and on terms that serve the delusions of White House supremacists.

African leaders must be brave enough to stop Western imperialists in their tracks, by all means necessary, if we are to reclaim the lost glory of our mother continent.
