The Revolution in Our Minds

The Revolution in Our Minds

In recent times, I have listened to the growing whispers and loud cries for revolution, born from a place of deep and justifiable frustration with the state of our nation. I understand this anguish. However, after much reflection, I must state plainly: Nigeria is not yet ready for a revolution – not because the cause is unworthy, but because the necessary foundation has not been laid.

The truth remains that no revolution in Nigeria is possible without first undergoing an evolution in our thoughts and ideas. Without adequate enlightenment, our nation will continue to be held back by ethno-religious sentiments and divisive loyalties that blind us to our collective good.

In my 2025 New Year message, I made it clear that our nation urgently needs a mental paradigm shift. I emphasized that no true revolution can occur without a prior evolution in our ideas, values, and approach to politics. This conviction informed our decision to build our campaign strategy around a single, powerful ideology: reorientation.

I have always maintained that the Nigerian political class perpetuates its hold on power not merely by weaponizing poverty, but by weaponizing a poverty of thought and a lack of reorientation.

Let us be clear: it will take a mentally alert citizenry to address every facet of the challenges bedeviling our nation—from corruption to insecurity, from poor governance to institutional decay. Indeed, our lawmaking institution, the National Assembly, has sadly become a fundamental clog in the wheel of national progress.

Yet, even more troubling is the growing alignment of our security personnel with the corrupt political elite who continue to plunder our collective wealth. A colleague of mine, a former military officer, once argued that only the military could save Nigeria. I agree, but not through the barrels of guns or the chaos of a violent revolt. It will take the reorientation of our security forces – their awakening to conscience, duty, and patriotism – to truly save this nation.

Our nation’s trajectory will only be fundamentally altered when a renaissance of ideas and civic virtue takes place across all sectors. The dawn of this new consciousness will mark the true beginning of our peaceful and enduring renewal.
